2019 SAG Awards: Black Panther wins top prize

Black Panther has once again demonstrated its popularity and confirmed its enviable position in the film industry after it won the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGs).

The Superhero film won the best ensemble cast award in a motion picture, which is almost equivalent to the SAG’s best film prize. The prize for the best action performance by a stunt ensemble equally went to Black Panther.

Many in the film industry have always seen Black Panther as a “protest film.”  It is, to many, an attempt by black actors to create an alternative discourse, as well as touch other sensitive social issues, which are otherwise or sometimes neglected by the mainstream – mostly White –  film directors. It is therefore no strange that Black Panther touches on a number of thematic preoccupations and our everyday political and social issues. More than anything, with hundreds of millions of dollar earnings, the film debunked the misconception in Hollywood, that Black actors led films were a failed venture from the start. Receiving the award Black Panther’s the lead actor Chadwick Boseman made a powerful statement when asked whether the success of Black Panther had altered the film industry’s perception: “My answer to that is… to be young, gifted and black.”
