Bayern Munich have thoroughly thrashed Barcelona by 8-2 goals to secure a much-deserved place in semi-finals of the European Champions League. With the humiliating defeat, the German powerhouse sent out an emphatic message to their other opponents in the race for the European prestigious cup, which must not be ignored.
Spanish heavyweights Barcelona with star players like Messi, Suárez, Rakitić , de Jong , Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergi could not match the terrific display of the compact, domineering, and ruthless Germans, who have played arguably the best season in Europe since football restarted in June.
Bayern scored four times in the first half and netted another quartet in the second, sending the confused Barcelona defence in a shambled state. With numerous defensive errors from Barcelona, the Spanish giants would rather count themselves lucky that they only concealed eight goals. Regardless, the huge loss does not help Barcelona’s recent embarrassing record defeat in European competition.
Thomas Muller scored the first goal in 4 minutes for Bayern. Barcelona equalised in 7 minutes through the fault of David Alaba, who netted a Jordi Alba cross into his own goal. Other goals for Bayern Munich came from Muller (31), Ivan Perisic (21), Serge Gnabry (27), Robert Lewandowski (82), Philippe Coutinho (92, 89). Luis Suarez scored in 57th minutes for Barcelona.
Robert Lewandowski the Bayern talisman scored his 14th Champions League goal in just eight games while Philippe Coutinho – on loan from the Barcelona – netted the seventh and eighth after coming in as a substitute.
With the last quarter-final scheduled on Saturday between Manchester City and French side Lyon, Bayern will know their semi-final opponent, as the winner of Manchester City – Lyon clash will face Bayern.
Bayern are by far the most successful team presently in the Champion, having won the European competition five times, the latest in 2013.
It is still not clear whether Bayern, the German league champions, will crown their impressive season with the sixth Champions League cup. Judging from their smashing and magnificent display tonight against Barcelona, it might not be entirely wrong to say that Bayern Munich have all it takes to lift the 2020 Champions League cup.
