Boxing: ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler dies aged 66
‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler, the former undisputed middleweight world champion, has died at 66. Hagler, one of the greatest boxers in the middleweight category, died unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire, his wife Kay Hagler said. “Today, unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire.” She announced sadly. The American boxer had 67 fights in his illustrious 14-year professional career, dominated the middleweight class until Sugar Ray Leonard outclassed him in April 1987. Hagler won 62 of the 67 contests, with impressive 52 knockouts, two draws and just three losses. Marvin Hagler successfully defended his title for extraordinary 12 times, including the epic fight against Thomas’ Hit Man’ Hearns in April 1985, which Hagler won. That classic fight labelled “The War” by boxing pundits solidified Marvin Hagler’s name in boxing history. Sugar Ray Leonard eventually defeated Marvin Hagler in 1987, but that defeat did not erase Hagler’s reputation as one of the world’s greatest boxers. Shock and tributes have greeted Marvin Hagler’s sudden death. Former heavyweight champion Derek Chisora called Hagler “one of the greatest”. Oscar De La Hoya, former boxing champion, said he was “Saddened to hear about the death of Marvelous Marvin Hagler. One of the greatest to ever step in the ring!” “I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the “incredible” Hagler’s death.” Former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan said lamented. “I’m honoured to have spent some amazing times with him. My heartfelt sympathies to his wife Kay and his family. Rest in Peace Champ.” The Irish Barry McGuigan added. Boxing promoter Frank Warren: “Boxing lost an all-time great today.” “He was a man of honour and a man of his word, and he performed in the ring with unparalleled determination.
