PROVERB OF THE MONTH: When the bag tears, the shoulders get a rest.
"When the bag tears, the shoulders get a rest." (English)
"Kotoku
tew a, na mmati adwo." (Twi, Ghana)
This
proverb teaches a profound lesson about disappointment, setbacks, and
unexpected blessings. At first glance, a torn bag appears to be a misfortune
because it can no longer carry its contents. However, the proverb draws
attention to another side of the situation: when the bag can no longer be
carried, the shoulders that bore its weight receive relief and rest.
In life,
people often become discouraged when their plans fail, opportunities disappear,
or expectations are not met. We naturally focus on what has been lost rather
than on what has been gained. Yet many disappointments may save us from burdens
we did not recognise, mistakes we were about to make, or pressures that were
becoming too heavy to bear.
For
example, a person may be devastated after losing a job, only to discover later
that the loss pushed them toward a better career path. A student may fail to
gain admission to a preferred school and later realise that another institution
offers opportunities that better suit their talents. A business venture may
collapse, preventing greater financial losses that could have occurred if it
had continued. In each case, what seemed like a setback eventually became a
source of relief, growth, or redirection.
The proverb
also reminds us of the importance of rest. In today's fast-paced world, many
people carry heavy "bags" of responsibilities, ambitions, worries,
and commitments. Sometimes an unexpected interruption—a cancelled project, a
postponed event, or a change in circumstances—creates an opportunity to pause,
reflect, and regain strength. Rather than viewing every disruption as a
tragedy, we can sometimes see it as an invitation to reassess our priorities
and prepare for a better future.
This wisdom
encourages resilience and optimism. It teaches that not every closed door is a
loss, and not every failure is a defeat. Some setbacks protect us from unseen
dangers, while others create space for new opportunities. When things do not go
according to plan, it is wise to remain patient and open-minded, trusting that
time may reveal benefits hidden within the disappointment.
Moral
Lesson:
When plans
fail, do not be consumed by frustration. What appears to be a setback today may
prove to be a blessing tomorrow, offering relief, new direction, or an
opportunity for rest and renewal.
