Dear Auntie Silvia,

I am deeply worried about my 24-year-old brother, whose excessive drinking is causing serious problems in our family. He spends most of his time drinking with friends and often comes home intoxicated. Because of this habit, he has lost job opportunities and constantly argues with family members.

What makes the situation worse is that my mother always defends him. She says he is still young and will eventually change. Whenever my father tries to correct him, she dismisses his concerns. Since my mother earns more money and makes most of the family decisions, my father has little influence in the home. As a result, my brother feels free to continue his behaviour without consequences.

The tension in our family is growing, and I fear my brother is ruining his future. What can we do before it is too late?

Yours sincerely,

Worried Sister

Dear Worried Sister,

Thank you for writing. Your concern for your brother and family is admirable.

Excessive drinking can damage a person's health, relationships, career, and future. While your mother's desire to protect her son comes from love, constantly excusing harmful behaviour may prevent him from recognising the seriousness of his actions. True support involves both compassion and accountability.

Your father's limited influence also highlights an important issue. Family leadership should not be determined by who earns more money. Parents are most effective when they work together, communicate openly, and present a united approach to solving problems.

Your brother may need an honest conversation about how his drinking is affecting him and those around him. Encourage family members to focus on solutions rather than blame. If possible, seek guidance from a trusted relative, community leader, counsellor, or support group that can help him understand the consequences of his behaviour and motivate positive change.

Most importantly, remember that you cannot change your brother on your own. Continue to care for him, but also focus on your own goals and well-being. With patience, family unity, and timely intervention, there is still hope that your brother can make better choices and build a brighter future.

With warm regards,

Auntie Silvia
