In a dramatic move, the South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has on Thursday reappointed his rival cum political nemesis Riek Machar as vice president, a position Mr Machar occupied before the outbreak of the most recent civil war, which started more than two years ago.
Clearly, the move by the President, will not only placate his rivals, it will go a long way in ending the devastating civil war, which has claimed thousands of lives, most of them innocent civilians, and displaced more than 2 million from their home, causing a humanitarian and economic cataclysm. The decision is a fulfilment of an important condition of a peace agreement reached in August aimed at ending the civil war, which broke out after President Salva Kiir accused his vice President Machar of trying to overthrow him.
As leaders of their forces, the recent UNO report blames both Kiir and Machar for being directly responsible for the atrocities committed by their forces during the war.
Do you think the re-appointment of Riek Machar is good / bad for South Sudan? Why?
