Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is on a month-long vacation with his entire family in China. Mr Mugabe, who travelled with his large family entourage and security personnel, left for China last month via Singapore, where he often receives medical treatment.
It is not the first time the 92-year-old president of Zimbabwe went on holidays abroad, however, why the present trip raised some eyebrows in many quarters is that the President will allegedly spend as much as $6m during his four weeks -long vacation. That is not all, with the president economic strangulation in Zimbabwe, coupled with unpaid arrears and salaries of many hardworking but poor Zimbabweans, many are seriously questioning the rationale behind the President`s trip as well as his attitude towards the suffering of his people. Others argue that the President should have shown some degree of responsibility and concern for the economic woes of his country by taking an austere vacation instead of living extravagantly, while the majority of his people are struggling to eat.
Yet, some supporters of President Mugabe see nothing wrong with the president taking his annual leave, which to them, is his constitutional right. However, opponents maintain that they are not against the vacation itself, but rather what goes with it. The alleged $6m cost of the month-long vacation, the whole family and a large number of aides accompanying the President, all the expenses, being paid from the tax payers money, are, to many, unrealistic, selfish and insensitive in view of the Zimbabwean economic malaise.
Opposition politicians including former vice president Joice Mujuru, leader of Zimbabwe People First and Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change have all condemned President Mugabe`s trip, which they see as extravagant. However, some question the sincerity of the opposition, wondering if they would not do just the same if they were in Mugabe`s shoe.
